This is for people that want to rollback their bios but EZ Flash wont let them

Or people that just need a different way to flash their bios on their boards.

Example: you are on bios 1001 then you up date to bios 3401 but you decide you want to go back to 1001 because your system was more stable on 1001 but bios 3401 wont let you go back using the flash tools in the bios or windows.

This method uses a tool called AFUDOS.exe to flash your bios in Dos

First thing to consider make sure u have “American Megatrends Bios”

– To check this in Windows 10 or 8.1 just right-click on the Start button and then choose Run.
– In the Run window or search box, type the following exactly as shown: msinfo32 and push enter or ok
Your System info should pop up and you can see your Bios

2nd thing to consider – THIS IS EASY it may look hard or like alot of steps but its not

Now that you confirmed you have a “American Megatrends Bios” and that its not Brain surgery we can proceed

SOFTWARE and Files that you will need

Files needed and in download

– Rufus Format (aka HP USB Boot Utility)
– AFUDOS.exe (this is software used to flash your bios)
– The files I have included in the “Copy to USB” folder (this is in the download I provide)
– UEFITool.exe (this is to convert your .CAP files to .ROM files)
– And of course your Bios File (this you will need to get from your Motherboards support page this is not included)

– CSM MUST BE ENABLED IN YOUR BIOS IN ORDER FOR THIS TO WORK
– IF YOU HAVE IT DISABLED YOU CAN DISABLE IT AGAIN AFTER YOU FLASH YOUR BIOS
– MAKE SURE YOUR .ROM FILE IS NAMED bios.rom OR IT WONT WORK
– YOU CAN KEEP ON USING THIS USB STICK FOR YOUR MOTHERBOARD OVER AND OVER AGAIN AS LONG AS YOU NAME THE BIOS FILE bios.rom WHEN USING IT WITH THIS USB .

Thanks! I have an Asus H81M-E, but the BIOS was using the H81M-A. I needed to update the firmware to solve problems, but could not by official methods. Your method is the only one that worked.

THank you A WHOLE BUNCH MAN!!! I come from the x299 series motherboards, where asus skimped on the mark 2 version having no flashback on it, and as I was updating it just i ncase , it came out that the latest bios tuned for the lastest x core series cpus messes up cpu temp readings making them 5 degrees more(not the actual temp but just what displayed) for the first gen x core(7900x etc). !!!

Anyone try this with an Asus tuf gaming x570? I want to downgrade past 1404 & 1405

Reply

I did all these steps and after finishing these 3 steps i restarted my pc and asked me to select my bios from usb or internet. I can read on the background the bios version I introduced in the bootable usb so I selected the cap file from 2016 and it says sucessfully updated but once I restart my computer it says introduce bios file again and everytime I boot my pc keep asking me the same. Do you know if I need a more updated version or I fucked up?

Worked flawless. Thanks. B450f downgraded from 2901

thank you ….you saved me from changing my laptop. It had a post bios of 1 minute for the last month and i thought it was hardware related. Wanted to try a bios flash just to be safe but asus wouldn't let me because "it was too old" . Flashed using your method and now it's brand new …thank you again.

If you update microcode CPU you cant downgrade BIOS, dont try !!!

Is this only for asus motherboards? or i can use it for my msi x470 gaming plus?

Reply

Is this only for asus motherboard or also msi?

I just get a msg "Reboot and select proper boot device"

Has anyone tried it on an Asus Prime X570-P, or similar?
Since BIOS 1403/1404 that ASUS motherboards compatibility with ASUS Xonar soundcards is gone.
It's happening to many users with different ASUS X570 boards and different soundcards.
I'm one of those "lucky" guys… Everything was fine in BIOS version 1201.
To make matters worse, the new BIOS is the first that doesn't let you downgrade!
Thanks

x570 workstation, after boot dos, read bios, it says wrong size, and do no downgrade

this will not work on z170 if u have microcode block. If u try this method on z170 with microcode block u will get ftp error and ur motherboard will be bricked

Dude, thanks so much for this tutorial! I just spun up an Unraid build with an ASUS PRIME X470-PRO and a GTX 1650, but was jumping through hoops trying to get GPU passthrough working in a Windows 10 VM. I didn't realize that this board came with a BIOS just a few months old that broke VFIO, causing the GPU to get stuck in a D3 state when trying to start up. Flashed back to a pre-Ryzen 3 release and now Plex is transcoding using hardware acceleration without issue.

After updating my Asus ROG 702VM gaming laptop to bios version 310, it doesn't boot anymore. Can't enable CSM. Did all what you said. I want to go back to bios version 306. Please help

Reply

Thank you! Asus pulled my bios version (2004) from their site because of unknown issues and I was stuck with it. This was the only way I was able to upgrade or downgrade my bios.

Excellent explanation. Very understandable. It worked flawlessly on the asus B350 plus. Thank you very much

Also had to turn off secure boot to get freeDOS to load

Anyone have success with this method converting a .310 BIOS file extension? This is the extension used on an Asus ROG Strix GL503
VM BIOS file? The UEFITool can't seem to see the file to load it for conversion to ROM. Specifically, the file and its extension look like this GL503VMF-AS.310. I'm all ears…

Hi, I'm trying to flash a bios for my Asus Maximus VIII Hero for my Engineering Sample i7 6700k (QHQF). I'm coming from this forum post https://forums.tomshardware.com/threads/asus-maximus-viii-formula-bios-ways-to-flashing-back.3494469/
The person on that post has a very similar motherboard and the same engineering sample cpu as me, so how would he have gotten the bios on 2202 without getting into the bios to boot from usb?

Motherboard BIOS are delivered so that all settings and information regarding the BIOS are stored in the BIOS. It is absolutely not recommended to play a BIOS update over the existing BIOS. This deletes settings and information of the mainboard.

The correct approach would be to make a backup and edit this backup. In addition, you should always have a BIOS backup if something goes wrong, you never know.

Some information can be read off the labels, for example the Mac address, some not they will be gone.

And many people now have no MAC address in the BIOS and all the other settings, but if that's interesting, I mean it works.

rom file size does not match existing bios

Impossible to downgrade on Z170-Pro Gaming. Whenever I flashed any other bios other than latest, it causes boot loop. Loads back in to EZ flash 3 and asks for "same .cap file," but unless its the latest bios, just reboots and tries to reflash until I use latest bios file. Someone please help me. Is the method patched, do I need to use different versio of afudos? Anything else I can still try?

Perfectly works with x470-f gaming. Considering what kind of bungler I am, it was pretty scary. But everything works fine again. Thank you so much, man.

used on ASUS ROG Zenith Extreme, 1402 to 0804. ASUS seems to have locked the BIOS from 1402 onward, for me, every BIOS after 1003 had its fill of problems, mostly RAM related (BSOD on any setting above 3000 MHz on 3200 MHz Corsair RAM), but also, boost & throttling stopped working out of the blue (BSOD's from overheating started showing up), reflashes, CMOS resets & battery pulls, nothing fixed it, couldn't find anything about it on the internet. So I backed to the most stable BIOS 0804 (for me), which has restored everything back to the way it was. THANK YOU!!!
